Goosebumps Special Edition #5 is written by R.L. Stine is an incredibly
popular series among upper and middle primary students. In this version the
book contains 10 horror stories.
The language used
within the book is quite basic, with the use of simple/moderate adjectives to
describe the situations or things within the book. Majority of the stories are
a build up, so there is a lot of description on what is occurring as well as
the storyline progressing quite quickly. This leaves little characterization and
doesn’t make the characters overly relatable.
As there are 10
stories, each chapter represents the start of a new story. Each story is like a
short narrative, all following the traditional structure which includes having
an orientation, complication and resolution. It is a simple structure to follow
yet effective as students who do not overly like reading can only read a little
bit and still follow and understand the storyline. A downfall to this is that
it is very basic and all very similar.
These are good
books for students to read in their own time, just as a recreation. They are a
good way of engaging students who may not want to read as they have gruesome
stories and a simplistic writing style
